Approved Since 1930 Founded in
1900, Stetson University College of Law is Florida's first law school. Stetson
boasts a long history of educating and training lawyers, judges, scholars, and
business and civic leaders. This strong
tradition is enhanced by the College of Law's devotion to developing the
lawyering skills necessary to become an effective member of the legal
profession. The College of Law operates an LL.M. program in International Law
and an LL.M. program in Elder Law (which is offered via distance education),
and summer study programs in Granada,
Spain; Buenos Aires, Argentina; The Hague, Netherlands; Freiburg, Germany; and
Tianjin, China. A part‑time, evening J.D. program started in August 2002.
Students may earn the following dual degrees: J.D./M.B.A., J.D./M.P.H., and
J.D./M.D. Located on
its own twenty‑one acre campus, Stetson's main campus is patterned after
a medieval Spanish Village. Its buildings are of Spanish architecture,
clustered around a plaza of fountains
and palm trees. The main campus is
centrally located in the City of Gulfport, a residential beachfront
community adjacent to St. Petersburg, in the dynamic Tampa Bay Area, one of the
nation's largest metropolitan areas. A satellite campus in downtown Tampa
opened in 2004. The faculty
at Stetson continues to grow in strength and number. Because of its strong
academic reputation, Stetson is able to attract distinguished scholars to its
faculty. Many members of the faculty
hold advanced law degrees or Master's or Ph.D. degrees in other disciplines.
The majority of the faculty have engaged in the full‑time practice of
law. Adding to the strength of the full‑time faculty is an outstanding
adjunct faculty, comprised of prominent practicing attorneys and judges, who
teach specialized elective courses, conduct seminars, and deliver lectures. A Legal
Information Center was dedicated in 1998, housing a cutting‑edge law
library containing more than 419,000 volumes. The Law Library's resources are
enriched by subscriptions to LexisNexis, Westlaw, and other electronic
information systems. Study carrels are wired for access to the Internet and
advanced legal research systems, as are most classroom seats. The College
of Law serves the legal profession and the community as a center for continuing
legal education (CLE). Stetson offers a variety of programs ranging from half‑day
seminars to multi‑day conferences in the U.S. and abroad. The CLE Office
attracts prominent practitioners and jurists to attend and participate in these
programs. Through the CLE programs, the College of Law extends its educational
mission beyond students pursuing legal degrees. Stetson has
Centers for Excellence in Advocacy, Elder Law, International Law, and Higher
Education Law and Policy, and a Consortium on Health Law and Policy
collaborates with the University of South Florida. Stetson is also the
headquarters for the National Clearinghouse for Science, Technology and the
Law. The centers and consortium provide forums to examine law and public policy
issues, and promote harmonious relationships among diverse constituencies
through training programs, publications, and information exchanges. Stetson
attracts a national student body. In the 2006 entering classes, more than 132
different undergraduate colleges and universities and 32 states/territories are
represented. Last year almost 2,900 applicants vied for about 345 seats in the
entering class. Approximately 50% of the 2006 entering students are women and
about 19% are members of minority groups. One of
Stetson University College of Law's greatest assets is the practical experience
offered to students through advocacy competitions and clinical programs. Over
the years, Stetson has built an impressive tradition of winning. Stetson is the
only law school in the nation ever to win all five national level trial
competitions in one academic year. Stetson is consistently ranked as one of the
top law schools in the nation in advocacy training and also has a nationally
recognized program in legal writing. The Stetson
Lawyers Association ensures that our more than 8,000 alumni are kept informed
about the College of Law through publications, regional gatherings, and an
online portal. Alumni are encouraged to participate in a wide variety of
activities. Stetson fosters close relationships among students and faculty, as
well as among the students themselves. Dean: Darby Dickerson (727) 562‑7858 Admissions: Laura Zuppo (727) 562‑7802 Career Development: Cathy K. Fitch (727) 562‑7815 College Relations: D. Aldon Knight (727) 562‑7819 Communications:
