A Dynamic
Institution The
University of Miami School of Law is located in a beautiful suburban area of a
great metropolitan center. Along with a distinguished faculty, a carefully
selected and exceptionally diverse student body, and excellent research library,
the 81‑year‑old Law School offers an innovative curriculum that is
rich, rigorous, and fully responsive to the needs of tomorrow's lawyers. The
School offers the J.D. degree; joint JD programs in business, public health,
and marine science; joint J.D. and LL.M. in tax; and seven LLM. Programs. The
School is accredited by the American Bar Association and is a member of the
Association of American Law Schools.
Rich
Curriculum with Outstanding Faculty The School
provides some of the most extensive trial advocacy, and clinical programs in
the country. Its unique first‑year curriculum trains student to master
both the theory and the craft of the law. The
faculty's varied legal backgrounds and diverse interests provide students with
an intellectually challenging and multifaceted legal education, adding new
national, international, and interdisciplinary dimensions to the School's
established tradition of sound teaching and scholarship. Over half of the
faculty has extensive international legal experience, which is reflected in the
School's curriculum as well as in the scholarship of the faculty. The School is
the only one in the continental U.S. to offer significant course work on
international and comparative law subjects in Spanish. The teaching
and research strengths of the School's faculty, the innovative nature of its
educational program, and the quality of its graduates have earned the School a
reputation as one of the most exciting law schools in the country.
Excellent
Research Library The Law
School encompasses a complex of buildings which form a quadrangle around an
open courtyard. In addition to several large classrooms, these buildings
contain a number of smaller classrooms, where seminars and workshops are held;
moot court rooms, where trial and appellate advocacy and other competitions
take place; and administrative offices. Faculty offices are located in the Law
Library. The student lounge, deli, and courtyard are popular, informal
gathering places for students and faculty. The University's wireless network
covers the entire complex. The
centerpiece of the Law School complex is the Law Library, one of the largest
research law libraries in the Southeast. Law Library collections comprise over
600,000 volumes in print and microform. The Law Library's collection has a
mixture of electronic and print resources. The Library has a comprehensive
collection of American law and also collects extensively in foreign and
international law and in the areas of taxation, estate planning, and ocean and
coastal law. Our collection of Latin American and Caribbean law is one of the
richest in the country. Students can access the library's electronic resources
both on‑campus and off‑campus. The Law
Library has substantial student‑oriented facilities such as a computer
lab, an electronic classroom, group study rooms and spacious reading areas.
Carrels throughout the Law Library contain computers or connections for laptops
to communicate with the School of Law's network and the University's wireless
network. The Law School network provides access to a wide variety of on‑line
information resources, including LEXIS, Westlaw, Computer‑Assisted Legal
Instruction (CALI) materials, plus access to the Internet and e‑mail, as
well as popular word processing and spreadsheet applications. The Law
Library's staff consists of 13 full‑time professional librarians and 15
other staff members. All are committed to providing a high level of service to
students and faculty. In addition
to Law Library collections and facilities, students and faculty have access to
the University's network of general and specialized libraries. Adjacent to the
Law School complex, the University's Otto G. Richter Library contains over 2.5
million volumes, offering important support for interdisciplinary research.
Resources of the School of Medicine and School of Marine and Atmospheric
Science libraries also are available for research in health and environmental‑related
areas.
Diverse
and Talented Student Body The Law
School admits first‑year students in the fall semester. It gives careful
consideration not only to each applicants undergraduate record and LSAT, but
also to personal information such as obstacles overcome, graduate studies, job
history, and significant extracurricular and community activities. Special care
is taken to ensure that the entering class is a highly talented and select
group, representing a wide variety of cultural, racial, ethnic, religious, and
geographic backgrounds. The Law School takes great pride in the diversity of
its students and faculty, as attorneys they develop the flexibility and understanding
that comes with exposure to viewpoints of persons whose life experiences have
been different from their own. The Law
School also accepts students who have undergraduate or law degrees from
accredited foreign schools. The Law School typically graduates more foreign
students from its J.D. program than any other ABA‑accredited school. In
addition, the LLM program in comparative law typically enrolls over 50 foreign
lawyers from 25 or more nations.
Financial
Aid Financial
assistance in the form of scholarships, low interest student loans, and
employment opportunities is available for qualified students. In recent years,
an average of 30% of admitted students have been awarded scholarships, with an
average of $7 million awarded.
A
Cosmopolitan Community The Law
School is located on the 260‑acre main Coral Gables campus of the
University of Miami, one of the largest private research universities in the
United States. Long regarded as one of Florida's most desirable residential
areas and increasingly recognized as an international business center, Coral
Gables offers all benefits of large‑city living in a relaxed subtropical
setting. Next door to
Coral Gables is the City of Miami, a burgeoning international center for trade
and finance. Miami and the greater South Florida Region have one of the most
dynamic and rapidly expanding legal communities in the country. Thus, the
community provides numerous opportunists for internships, clinical programs,
and the law clerking experiences. Students can commute quickly and easily between
campus and the downtown Miami legal community via Metrorail, an elevated rail
system. The cultural
diversity of Miami makes for an extraordinary setting in which to live while
attending law school. Greater Miami is comprised of many distinctive
neighborhoods, among them: Art Deco‑inspired South Beach; "Little
Havana;" fashionable Coconut Grove; and South Miami, with its small‑town
ambiance. In addition, South Florida offers a wealth of cultural attractions,
sporting events, and natural treasures to enjoy year‑round. Most
students reside in the vicinity of the Law School, where apartments are
plentiful and affordable; on‑campus housing is limited. Dean: Dennis O. Lynch (305) 284‑2394 Associate Dean:
