Northwestern University School of Law is a nationally oriented private institution dedicated to advancing
the understanding of law and to producing graduates prepared to excel in a
rapidly changing world. Legal education at Northwestern uniquely blends a rigorous
intellectual environment within a collegial and supportive community. With one
of the lowest student‑faculty ratios in the country, Northwestern
provides students with unusually close contact with full‑time professors
who are noted scholars and with an opportunity to participate in the design of
their own courses of study.
Founded in 1859, the Law School
has a rich and storied history. Among its graduates are U.S. Supreme Court
justices, governors, senators, United Nations ambassadors, cabinet members,
chairs of regulatory commissions, leading scholars and business executives, the
first commissioner of baseball and the first woman to receive a law degree in
the United States.
Northwestern is small and highly selective, enrolling
about 240 JD students each year from around the United States and abroad. More than
90 percent of JD students enter the law school with full‑time work
experience and many possess other graduate or professional degrees.
Northwestern seeks a student body not only with unparalleled academic ability
and achievement but also with strong interpersonal skills, ambition, work
experience and substantial maturity. These characteristics enable students to
thrive in the Northwestern community and to excel in their careers. To fulfill
this goal, Northwestern is the only major law school that strongly encourages
applicants to interview, either on‑campus or through its alumni network
throughout the nation and the world.
In addition to its JD Program, Northwestern offers a
three‑year JD‑Master of Business Administration with Northwestern's
Kellogg School of Management, a JD‑Phd program, a joint Master of Studies
in Law and Master of Science in Journalism with Northwestern's Medill School of
Journalism and an LLM in Taxation which also includes several non‑degree
and executive and professional education programs. Northwestern offers two
primary graduate programs for international students, a nine‑month LLM
(Master of Laws) program and a one‑year Graduate Program in Law and
Business, sponsored jointly with Kellogg. The Law
School also offers an LLM to legal and
business professionals through an executive program in Seoul,
Korea and Madrid, Spain.
The Northwestern faculty is composed of a group of the
finest scholars, diverse in background and perspective, whose research and writing
makes majors contributions to important academic and public policy debates.
Today's faculty carries on the tradition of John Henry Wigmore, a former
professor and Dean of the law school, who is considered by many to have been America's
foremost legal scholar. Northwestern professors have a passion for teaching and
for engaging students in both theoretical and practical legal applications.
The faculty includes scholars with advanced degrees in
economics, linguistics, history, philosophy, political science and sociology,
as well as law; it includes a former chairman of the United States Securities
and Exchange Commission, the first American attorney to argue before the
European Court of Human Rights and the senior author of the most widely used
casebook on American legal history. The full‑time faculty is supplemented
by a distinguished group of adjunct professors who teach a wide variety of specialized
courses and by a number of visiting professors from the U.S. and
abroad.
Northwestern's curriculum emphasizes teamwork,
communication and presentation skills. The flexible curriculum also allows
students to continue a broad range of study after their first year of law
school or to focus on a specific area of interest, many within seminars or
classes from 10 to 50 students. The Owen L. Coon/James A. Rahl Senior Research
Program enables third year students to do individual research under the direct
supervision of a professor, using library, field and interdisciplinary research
methods.
Northwestern's nationally recognized clinical program
enables students not only to obtain experience representing clients but also allows
them to learn legal practice skills in highly regarded simulation courses or in
externships. Bluhm Legal Clinic faculty, attorneys and students work in teams
to prepare cases in juvenile justice, domestic violence, immigration and
asylum, and criminal matters. In addition to fine‑tuning their skills as
advocates, they often effect change in the law and legal institutions. The
Bluhm Legal Clinic centers ‑ Children and Family Justice Center, Small
Business Opportunity Center, Center for International Human Rights, Investor
Protection Center, Center on Wrongful Convictions and MacArthur Justice Center
are nationally recognized for their direct involvement in legal reform.
Northwestern's law students take an intense and
energetic interest in their community and their education. Several student‑edited
scholarly journals are available for research, writing and editing, including
the Northwestern University Law Review, Journal of Criminal Law and
Criminology, Northwestern Journal of International Law & Business,
Northwestern Journal of Technology and Intellectual Property, Journal of
International Human Rights and Journal of Law and Social Policy.
Over 30 student‑run organizations, ranging from advocacy groups to those
focused on careers to social organizations, enrich the community.
Northwestern's law library, the Pritzker Legal
Research Center,
has an excellent, service‑oriented staff. Wireless technology has been
installed so that students can take advantage of a computer network that
includes Internet access, word processing software, and legal research
databases. The library's collection is one of the finest in the nation. It
houses over 630,000 volumes and includes outstanding collections in
international, foreign and Anglo‑American law and rare books.
The Law School is located along the shores of Lake Michigan
in Chicago, a
truly spectacular setting in which to study law. Its proximity to courts,
commerce and public interest activities enables students to experience the
practice of law as well as its theory. The Law
School's three interconnected
buildings along Chicago's
lakefront also house the national headquarters of the American Bar Foundation.
