ABA Approved Since 1925
Founded in 1869, the Notre Dame
Law School
is the oldest Roman Catholic law school in the United States. Its national program
is designed to equip graduates to practice law in any jurisdiction. Among its
graduates are members of the bar in every state and numerous foreign nations.
The school is approved by the American Bar Association and is a member of the
Association of American Law Schools. In addition to offering the Juris Doctor
degree, Notre Dame has LL.M. and J.S.D. programs in international human rights
law and a second LL.M. program in comparative law offered in London and designed for non‑American
lawyers.
The Notre Dame program strives to educate men and women
to become lawyers of extraordinary professional competence who possess a
partisanship for justice, an ability to respond to human need, and compassion
for their clients and colleagues.
Notre Dame Law School is a small law school. It is a community of faculty
and students of every race and creed from throughout the nation and the world.
Each fall approximately 180 full‑time J.D. students begin their studies
at Notre Dame. The law school has three formalized joint degree programs, a
J.D./M.B.A. program, a J.D./Master of Engineering program, and a J.D./M.A. in
English program. Where appropriate and with the approval of the department
involved, other joint degree programs may be fashioned to suit individual
students' interests or needs.
Methods of instruction are both traditional and
innovative. The first‑year required curriculum is rigorous and
traditional. In the second and third years, traditional teaching methods are
supplemented by experience‑based techniques (actual clinical and simulated),
seminars, interdisciplinary study, courses in other graduate departments of the
University and directed readings.
Notre Dame offers study in London for credit on both a summer‑school
and academic‑year basis. The London
program has been in continuous operation since 1968. Each year approximately 30
J.D. students elect to spend their second year at the Notre Dame London Law
Centre. Some 50 hours of credit are generally available including standard
American law courses and a variety of international and comparative law
courses. Since 1970, Notre Dame also has operated a separate London summer program for credit for its own
students and for students from other law schools.
A wide range of student activities is available.
Students participate in the production of four law journals, including the Notre
Dame Law Review, the Journal of College and University Law, the Notre
Dame Journal of Law, Ethics and Public Policy, and the Journal of Legislation.
The school also sponsors trial‑ and appellate‑level moot court
programs, an international moot court program, and an outstanding trial
advocacy program. Cocurricular opportunities that combine classroom learning
with practical experience include the Notre Dame Legal Aid Clinic, and its
immigration clinic component, and internships with the local prosecutor's,
public defender's, and U.S. Attorney's offices. In our Legal Aid Clinic,
students have the opportunity to represent clients in both state and federal
courts and administrative agencies. The Clinic also provides transactional
lawyering services that do not involve litigation. Subject matters handled by
the Clinic include mental health, consumer protection, immigrant rights, housing
and disability benefits. A variety of student organizations provide
opportunities to explore social, cultural, religious and political issues. A
full‑service career services office assists students in finding permanent
and summer employment.
The faculty includes 45 full‑time teaching‑and‑research
and library faculty. The faculty are actively involved in research and
regularly produce books and articles receiving national and international attention.
The hallmark of legal education at Notre Dame is the meaningful interaction
between faculty and students. The faculty members are accessible and spend more
hours in private student conferences than in the classroom.
The Kresge Law Library holds over 660,000 volumes and
microform equivalents and is a leader in developing computer‑based legal‑research
methodologies, especially using emerging technologies. The Library subscribes
to all major computer‑assisted research services, including LEXIS/NEXIS
and WESTLAW. Law students and faculty also have immediate access to the more
than two million volumes in the research collections of the University's
Theodore M. Hesburgh Library and, via the OCLC national database of library
holdings, have the capability to identify and procure materials from over
48,500 US
libraries and over 60,000 libraries in 112 countries. The library collection is
available to law students and faculty 24 hours a day, seven days a week.
