The University of San Diego School of Law is an outstanding
center of legal education with a distinguished faculty, a talented student body
and a dedication to innovation.
The USD
School of Law is one of
only 80 law schools in the country to have a chapter of the Order of the Coif,
the most distinguished rank of American law schools. The school is accredited
by the American Bar Association and is a member of the Association of American
Law Schools. Founded in 1954, the law school is part of the University of San Diego,
a private, nonprofit, independent, Roman Catholic university chartered in 1949.
The law school's approximately 1,100 students come from
more than 43 states, 20 countries and 130 undergraduate institutions. With approximately
41 percent women and 28 percent minorities, the diverse student body
contributes to the law school's unique atmosphere.
The law school enjoys a long tradition of supporting
talented, energetic and innovative teacher‑scholars. Faculty members
author significant books, treatises and articles on a vast range of legal
topics, and participate regularly in national and international academic
conferences. USD School of Law faculty is among the
highest rated in the United States, ranking 23rd in the nation based on
scholarly impact according to the 2005 Leiter's Law School Ranking of Faculty.
The School
of Law offers a juris
doctor (J.D.) degree as well as programs that allow the concurrent pursuit of a
master of business administration (M.B.A.), an international master of business
administration (I.M.B.A.) or a master of arts in international relations
(M.A.). Students who wish to specialize in a particular area of law can choose
electives from a broad range of courses. The law school is also a worldwide
leader in graduate legal education, with nationally recognized LL.M. programs
in taxation, international law, business and corporate law and comparative law.
In addition, the law school sponsors the Institute on International and
Comparative Law, which conducts summer programs in England,
France, Ireland, Italy,
Russia and Spain.
To prepare its students to practice law in the new
century, the law school offers one of the strongest and most comprehensive
programs of advocacy and clinical legal education in the United States. Through these
programs, the law school has become a national leader in bridging the gap
between courses in legal theory and the practical skills and experience
individuals need to become effective lawyers. Students hone their written and
oral advocacy skills and experience the excitement of competition through the
law school's Appellate Moot Court Program and National Mock Trial Team.
The Pardee
Legal Research
Center offers state‑of‑the‑art
services and facilities to law students and other researchers. With a
collection of more than 530,000 volumes and volume equivalents, USD holds one
of the largest legal research collections in California.
The law school's Career Services office provides
students comprehensive job search assistance through regular and ongoing career
advising during all law school semesters. Staff members meet with students to
discuss job search strategies and critique résumés and cover letters. Each
year, law firms and government agencies from more than 25 states and 70 cities
participate in the law school's extensive recruiting program.
The USD
School of Law is
committed to providing all possible financial assistance to eligible students
whose resources are insufficient to meet their educational expenses. Sources of
financial aid include more than 370 need/merit, merit and diversity‑based
scholarships; federal plans, such as work‑study programs; the Perkins and
Stafford loan programs; and institutional
loans. Private loan programs are also available to assist law students with
supplemental financing.
Preparing students for the practice of law in the 21st
century is more than a slogan at USD ‑‑ it's a serious commitment.
