The Indiana University School
of Law ‑ Bloomington
For more than 160 years, the Indiana University School
of Law‑Bloomington has offered students the highest quality legal education
in a college setting. With over 650 students, drawn from over 200 undergraduate
schools in the United States
and from five continents, the Law
School is small enough to
retain its distinctive sense of community while large enough to provide a
stimulating, cosmopolitan environment.
The Law
School stresses
innovative, interdisciplinary education which seeks to broaden students'
practical understanding of legal issues in an increasingly complex, global
society. With 55 full‑time faculty members and a number of practitioners
and judges who serve as adjunct faculty, the Law School
features a student‑faculty ratio of 12 to one, which provides significant
faculty‑student interaction.
The Law School's comprehensive curriculum is taught by
internationally recognized faculty and includes leading programs in a variety
of important specialties such as business law, tax, environmental law,
communications and information law, intellectual property, and global and
international law, just to name a few. Through partnerships with the Kelley
School of Business, the School of Public and Environmental Affairs, the Department of
Telecommunications, and other departments of Indiana
University, the Law School
offers a number of joint law degree programs, minors, and opportunities for
interdisciplinary study. Visiting faculty from the international legal
community teach courses each year at the Law School, bringing their world view
and experience to the classroom.
The curriculum extends far beyond the classroom. Each
year distinguished jurists, scholars, and practitioners from around the world
visit the School to lecture and work with students. In recent years these
visitors have included Chief Justice William H. Rehnquist, Justice Ruth Bader
Ginsburg, U.S. Attorney General Janet Reno, U.S. Solicitor General Seth Waxman,
Filipino Supreme Court Justice Flerida Romero, retired Japanese Supreme Court
Justice Shigemitsu Dando, consumer advocate Ralph Nader, civil rights activist
and NYU professor Derrick Bell, Chief Judge Richard Posner, former Environmental
Protection Agency Administrator William Ruckelshaus, Cambridge University Vice
Chancellor Sir David G.T. Williams, Southern Poverty Law Center co‑founder
Morris Dees, death penalty defense lawyer Stephen Bright, and many more.
Students and faculty have access to one of the finest
legal research facilities in the nation. The Law Library, which is among the 20
largest in the country, offers more than half a million volumes and cutting‑edge
electronic technology. The library hosts the Virtual Law Library, the world's
leading Internet legal research tool.
The Law
School also offers these
distinctive features:
* An
innovative legal writing and advocacy program provides students with the skills
necessary to meet the demands of a successful law practice.
* An
internship program guarantees a summer internship to every interested student
following the first year of law school.
* The
School's graduate study program attracts postgraduate students from around the
world and adds a global perspective to the community.
*
International study opportunities include the School's London Study
Program and exchange programs with universities in Paris,
Barcelona, Beijing,
Hong Kong and many more.
* A mentoring
program links interested students with practicing attorneys throughout the
country, providing valuable contacts and advice.
* Three law
journals provide writing and editing opportunities for students in their second
and third years of law school.
* In‑house
clinics and externship programs offer students a wide range of opportunities to
gain practical experience.
* The Law School's
tuition represents one of the best values in legal education, and numerous
scholarships and grants are available.
