ABA Approved Since 1975
Founded in 1974, the Law Center
grants JD, JD/MBA, JD/MS (Dispute Resolution), JD/MURP, JD/MS (Computer
Science) and JD/MS (Psychology) degrees. It is accredited by the ABA and is a member of the
AALS. Our parent university, founded in 1964, is accredited by the Southern Association
of Colleges and Schools.
Shepard Broad Law Center has approximately 950 students in its full‑time
day and part‑time evening programs. Over 2,800 individuals applied for
the 370 seats in the 2007 entering class. Reflecting its appeal to the mature
student, for whom law is a second career, students range in age from the early
20's to the 50's. Approximately 25% are members of minority groups. Our
students come from all over the United
States as well as from several foreign
countries.
The Law Center is located on the main university campus in Davie, a western suburb of Fort Lauderdale. The spacious atrium in our
facility joins two multi‑story wings, a library wing and an office/classroom
wing. The Law Center building overlooks a lake and
is within walking distance of cafeteria, bookstore, and apartment/dormitory
facilities. Its courtrooms and classrooms are equipped to utilize technological
innovations as well as traditional teaching methods.
Our classroom/office wing reflects one of our most
important traditions, attention to the student as an individual. Small
classrooms allow us to offer all first year classes in sections of 60 or fewer
students. Upperclass sections rarely exceed 75 students, and numerous workshop
and seminar electives are available to groups of 20 or fewer students. Faculty
offices are clustered across from the library entrance, facilitating student‑faculty
interaction. Law Center faculty members are known for
their open door office policy and their commitment to our students.
Our Law Library is one of the few in the United States
serving as a depository for state, federal, and United Nations documents. Its
resources include over 365,000 volume equivalents, including specialized
collections for taxation, international law, criminal law, admiralty,
children's rights, jurisprudence, law and popular culture, and trial practice.
Its Learning Technology Center
includes an extensive collection of media material, computer data bases, and
microform and CD‑ROM technology. All entering students bring laptop computers
and use our wireless technology to access the NSU Law Net.
No one method of instruction predominates; our 59 full‑time
faculty members engage students in traditional Socratic dialogue, guide them
through problem and simulation exercises, and supervise them in live‑client
clinical placements. Prominent local practitioners and judges serve as adjunct
faculty and enrich our curriculum in their areas of expertise.
Our innovative four semester Lawyering Skills and
Values curriculum introduces students to legal research and writing, client
interviewing, negotiating, and pretrial practice. Students select between
general practice, litigation, and transactional tracks in their second year.
Our skills curriculum includes numerous workshops, pre‑trial
and trial advocacy courses, and clinical offerings. Seminars consider topics
ranging from AIDS to Corporate Governance; workshops include Bankruptcy,
Business Planning, and Probate. In addition to offerings traditionally thought
of as "bar" courses, students are exposed to courses as diverse as
Admiralty, Construction Law, and Immigration Law. Our international offerings
include a dual degree program in Barcelona,
Spain.
Because externships offer students hands‑on
experience in many facets of lawyering, every student can enroll in a full
semester clinical placement. Placements include Criminal, ADR, Family,
Business, Personal Injury Litigation, International, and Environmental. Students
may also participate in our judicial internship program or our consumer protection
internship. Our individuals with disabilities project provides valuable
academic experiences, and our street law program introduces middle and high
school students to the legal system.
The student‑run Nova Law Review is
published three times per year. Its highly‑acclaimed symposium issues
have covered an array of topics, such as drug testing; reproductive rights; and
the popular culture. Other students participate in the Journal of International
& Comparative Law, which annually publishes a bilingual issue or the International
Citator. Active moot court and ATLA groups allow students to participate in
intramural and interscholastic moot court, counseling, negotiating, and trial
competitions.
Several research and advocacy institutes are affiliated
with the Law Center. These include Public Interest
Law Center, the Center for the Study of Youth Policy, Everglades Law
Center, Inter‑American
Center for Human Rights, and the Disability Law Institute. These institutes
offer opportunities for students and faculty to make important contributions to
the administration of justice.
Law Center alumni
are represented in major law firms in Florida
as well as in other states. Several serve as judges, legislators, and city
officials. An active mentoring program pairs attorneys with law students
interested in particular areas of practice.
