UNIVERSITY OF MAINE SCHOOL OF LAW 246 DEERING AVENUE PORTLAND, MAINE 04102 Telephone: (207) 780-4355 URL: http://mainelaw.maine.edu ABA
Approved Since 1962 Our Mission The School,
which fosters close student/faculty interaction, seeks to educate students from
a variety of backgrounds through a Juris Doctorate degree program providing the
public and private sectors with distinctive members of the legal profession.
The University of Maine School of Law is the only law school in Maine and one
of only two public law schools in New England. With responsibilities to the
statewide University System, it is committed to educational excellence,
professionalism, maintaining a strong core curriculum for students, and acting
as a resource for the entire state and region. In addition, the School
contributes nationally and globally to the advancement and improvement of the
law in a number of ways including providing leadership in scholarly and
professional research and writing. The School also engages in extensive public
service aimed at improving the law and the legal system. Our Size With a total
student body of around 270, we are among the smallest fully accredited law schools
in the United States. Our size, which intentionally remains small, allows for a
personal, one‑on‑one study of the law. Professors serve as
teachers, writing advisors, activity leaders, moot court judges and colleagues. Program
of Study The three
year curriculum is intensive and challenging. It is both broad and general in
nature, offering courses in subjects as diverse as international business
transactions and environmental law, as well as traditional core courses. The
underlying purpose of the curriculum is to give students a solid foundation in
legal and policy analysis and practical lawyering skills that will serve them
well in any field they choose to pursue. Though teaching methods vary from
course to course depending on the instructor and the subject matter, the
overall emphasis is on personal contact between student and teacher, as well as
among the students themselves. Some upper‑level courses have enrollments
of between 10‑20 students; class sizes of 20‑40 are common. Our
Commitment We take our
responsibility as a public institution very seriously. Here faculty and
students help create and comment on state and federal law and policy. Our
students benefit the public through service to low income clients in the Law
School's Cumberland Legal Aid Clinic, through summer public interest
fellowships with legal services agencies and government offices, through the
Law School's Patent Program and Marine Law Institute, and through individual
volunteer projects. Our graduates in turn bring a sense of public service into
their careers, whether they pursue them in the private or public sectors. Not
surprisingly, our alumni include several of Maine's former Governors, and
current Attorney General, United States Attorney and Chief Justice of the Maine
Supreme Judicial Court as well as many employed in Washington, D.C. Faculty Our faculty
bring a wide range of experience to the classroom, and are noted for their
exceptional ability as teachers. They are graduates of Berkeley, Boston
University, Chicago, Columbia, Georgetown, George Washington, Harvard, Maine,
Michigan, NYU, Notre Dame, Pennsylvania, Puget Sound, Virginia, Wisconsin and
Yale Law Schools. Before our faculty began teaching, they were judicial clerks,
private practitioners, government attorneys, and research scholars. Many
continue to serve as advisors to legislative, judicial and professional bodies
and as members of government commissions. Their research spans matters of
state, national and international interest and examines topics as varied as
international treaty practice, Maine tort law, domestic violence, marine law,
coastal zone management, federal tax elections, constitutional controls over
the military, rules of evidence, intellectual property and commercial
practices. Dean: (207) 780‑4344 Admissions: (207) 780‑4341 Financial Aid:
