- An emotional President Barack Obama told the American people this week that he would no longer wait for Congress to pass new gun control regulations. President Obama announced executive action intended to do what he says the American people want Congress to do when it comes to guns.
The centerpiece of Obama's executive action is an effort to narrow what Democrats refer to as the "gun-show loophole." The new regulations will require that anyone running a business that sells a gun must get a license and conduct background checks.
Additionally, Obama is seeking to beef up the background check system. The Federal Bureau of Investigations plans to hire hundreds of new staff to process background checks around the clock. Gun dealers will also be required to notify the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco and Firearms if their guns are lost or stolen.
In his address, President Obama also asked for $500 million to increase access to mental healthcare, for additional ATF agents, and to fund U.S. Attorneys offices efforts to prevent those guilty of domestic violence from getting a gun.
