  • The U.S. Supreme Court recently signaled that judges should carefully review excessive punitive damage awards and should not hesitate to reduce them, holding that a $145 million punitive damage award violated the Due Process Clause of the Fourteenth Amendment where compensatory damages were $1 million. State Farm Mutual Automobile Insurance Co. v. Campbell, 123 S.Ct. 1513 (2003).
