Christopher J. Nicholson

Christopher J. Nicholson: Attorney with Jones & Hawley, P.C.

Biography

Chris Nicholson joined the law firm of Jones & Hawley P.C. as a shareholder. Chris has worked closely with Greg Hawley since 2007, after serving as Clerk to the Honorable Tom King, Jr., in the 10th Judicial Circuit of Alabama. He primarily represents clients in complex civil litigation and cases involving environmental torts. He also assists clients in False Claims Act cases, and in responding to government investigations. Chris particularly enjoys working with entrepreneurs and small business owners to address their litigation needs, and he has experience representing clients in disputes involving sales contracts and secured transactions under the Uniform Commercial Code.

In the aftermath of the Deepwater Horizon oil spill on April 20, 2010, Chris spent six months in Dauphin Island, Bayou La Batre, and Mobile, Alabama, guiding local residents, businesses, and government officials through the claims process administered by Kenneth Feinberg.

Chris received his undergraduate degree from the University of Virginia in 2003 and earned his law degree in 2006 from the University of Alabama School of Law. During law school, he served as research assistant to Professor William Henning, Executive Director of the National Conference of Commissioners on Uniform State Laws. His duties included research and selection of UCC cases for inclusion in Professor Henning’s revision of Sales and Bulk Transfers (Duesenberg, King, Henning, and Gabriel, 2001), as well as editing the Article 9 volume of the Uniform Commercial Code Series (Hawkland, et al., 2001).

Chris enjoys giving back to the City of Birmingham, including service on the Board of Trustees of the Altamont School, the Board of Directors of the Birmingham Volunteer Lawyers Program, and the Screening Committee of the Sidewalk Film Festival. Chris currently serves as President of the Altamont Alumni Association and he chairs the Governance Committee of the Birmingham Volunteer Lawyers Program. He is also dedicated to serving the Alabama State Bar and Birmingham Bar Association, where he has noticeably contributed to or chaired committees such as the ASB’s Pro Bono Task Force and the BBA’s Pro Bono and Long Range Planning Committees.
