Attorney Awards

Jim was born and raised in Birmingham. Now in his twenty-eighth year at Sirote, Jim handles civil litigation, with a particular focus on life and disability insurance litigation; representation of banks and mortgage companies; trust, estate, and probate litigation; shareholder and derivative lawsuits; construction litigation; and all forms of commercial litigation on behalf of individuals and businesses. Jim has handled matters in Alabama, Georgia, Mississippi, Tennessee, Florida, Kentucky, Ohio, and Arkansas. He also handles appeals in state and federal courts, including the United States Supreme Court.

Why did you become an attorney?

I don’t know why, but for as long as I can remember, I wanted to be a trial lawyer. I went to college knowing that I would go to law school after graduation, and I entered law school knowing I would be a litigator one day. Even when I applied for a job at Sirote, I checked only the litigation box on the form because I knew I didn’t want to do anything else.

What are you most proud of in your practice?

My devotion to my clients and their needs, and my willingness to be available to them at all times. I don’t keep office hours. Most of my long-term clients will tell you that my responsiveness is one of the things that first appealed to them.

What do you like to do in your spare time?

Being with my two teenage children has been my favorite out-of-office activity for the past 19 years. We just got back from a long trip to Europe, just the three of us. We went to Paris and London and had a blast.
