Biography

Karen Berhow Southard joined the firm of Porter, Porter & Hassinger, P.C. in 2003, and has been practicing in the areas of workers' compensation defense, personal injury defense, and insurance defense litigation with the firm for over fourteen years, specializing in representing employers. She received her Bachelor of Arts degree from the University of Alabama in 2000, graduating magna cum laude with a double major in English and Political Science. While in undergraduate school, she was the Scholarship Chair for Zeta Tau Alpha, and was a member of numerous honor societies, including being inducted into the prestigious Phi Beta Kappa. She attended law school at the University of Alabama, graduating cum laude with a Juris Doctorate in 2003. While attending law school, she was a senior editor for the Journal of the Legal Profession, and a member of the Farrah Law Society.

Ms. Berhow became licensed to practice law in 2003 in the State of Alabama, as well as in the U.S. District Court for the Northern and Middle Districts of Alabama. She is a member in good standing of the American Bar Association, and the Alabama State Bar Association, where she is a member of the Workers' Compensation Section and Women's Section. She is also an active member of the Birmingham Bar Association, where she serves on the Medical Liaison Committee, and is a member of the Workers' Compensation Section and Women's Section.

During her practice with Porter, Porter & Hassinger, Ms. Berhow has represented numerous clients, from small to large corporations, as well as numerous municipalities. Representative clients include Asplundh Tree Expert Co.; Burford's Tree, Inc.; Utility Lines Construction Services, Inc.; Brasfield & Gorrie, LLC; Millennium Risk Managers, LLC; Travelers Insurance; the City of Bessemer; and Judson College. Ms. Berhow has successfully defended clients at the trial court level, and has obtained numerous summary judgments on behalf of clients in both tort and workers' compensation cases. Ms. Berhow has also handled appeals to both the Alabama Court of Civil Appeals and the Alabama Supreme Court, and has obtained successful rulings from both appellate courts.

Ms. Berhow has recently become more active in health care law issues, and currently serves as the President of the Women's Leadership Council for the Department of Neurosurgery at the University of Alabama at Birmingham. Ms. Berhow also frequently speaks at workers' compensation and tort conferences, with expertise in topics ranging from settlement negotiation tactics, workers' compensation trial and settlement matters, and ethics. She also frequently advises clients, as well as provides lectures and written materials to both clients and fellow attorneys, on legal issues involving Medicare and the continually evolving practice of using Medicare Set-Asides in workers' compensation and tort cases.

In the community, Ms. Berhow not only serves as President of the Neurosurgery Women's Leadership Council, but she also volunteers as head of committees at her daughter's school, and is a member of Church of the Highlands. She loves spending time with her husband, Jon, and six year old daughter, Kate.

    I have more than 40 years experience in civil practice. I have been close friends with most of the more able trial lawyers. Karen has been known to me since she was a law student. I consider her to be one of the more able lawyers in Alabama.
