Biography

Melinda helps clients navigate complex trust and estate matters to manage and preserve their wealth. As a member of our Tax Practice Group , as well as our Private Clients, Trusts and Estates Practice Group , she focuses on business and succession planning, estate planning for individuals and families, and prenuptial and postnuptial agreements, as well as probates and trusts. She has made The Best Lawyers in America list every year since 1993 and was named a Mid-South Super Lawyer every year from 2008 to 2015. Melinda taught estate planning from 2003 to 2010 at Samford University's Cumberland Law School.

Why did you become an attorney?

When my husband was in law school, he was sick for a few days, and I attended his classes and took notes for him. At the time we were both at Vanderbilt. I was in the masters' program but enjoyed his classes much more than mine. I finished my master's degree, but at the first opportunity I started law school. It was a challenge with two young children but quite exhilarating.

What is the best part of your job?

I meet with and get to know a lot of really nice people that I can usually help. I love creative problem solving and being able to do that for people that I really like and enjoy is a huge plus.

What do you think are the three most important things you do to serve your clients?

Listen attentively, think through and explain alternative solutions, and care about the people I work for and with.

What do you like to do in your spare time?

I paint. I make wheel-thrown miniature pottery, write poetry, and read both fiction and non-fiction.
