Rhett Owens is a Partner in the firm’s office in Birmingham, Alabama. His practice focuses on a variety of professional liability cases, including medical malpractice, elder care abuse and regulatory non-compliance cases. He recently published an article in the Alabama Lawyer, a leading legal publication in the Southeast, titled “A Right to Refuse: The Legalities of a Pregnant Patient’s Refusal of Medical Treatment.”

Rhett has served as both first and second chair in numerous jury trials, bench trial and arbitration actions, and he has represented clients before state and federal courts in Alabama on pre-trial issues, including requests for temporary restraining orders, and preliminary and permanent injunctive relief regarding the theft of trade secrets and non-competition agreements.

Rhett also has significant experience in business litigation, construction and transportation-related matters, and estate planning and administration. Earlier in his career, Rhett was a litigator with Burr & Forman, LLP.

He has been recognized as a “Rising Star” of the Birmingham Bar by B-Metro Magazine, and was twice named an Alabama Super Lawyers Rising Star. He has frequently been ranked as a Mid-South Super Lawyers Rising Star. Rhett has served on the Board of Directors of the Alabama Society for Healthcare Risk Managers (ALASHRM) and will serve as President of the organization in 2019.

Rhett earned a Juris Doctorate, cum laude, from the Cumberland School of Law at Samford University, and he holds a Bachelor of Arts degree, magna cum laude, in Political Science and English from Hampden-Sydney College.

Outside of his practice, Rhett enjoys spending time with his wife, Gunter, and their two children, Helen and Charlie. He and his family are active members of Cathedral Church of the Advent, including its small group and homeless outreach programs.


Rhett is an experienced litigator who represents skilled nursing and assisted living facilities in the State of Alabama in both wrongful death and personal injury actions, and he has represented health care providers in high risk surgery and birth trauma medical malpractice actions. He represents business clients in both commercial and residential construction disputes, and defends transportation clients in personal injury and wrongful death actions arising from motor vehicle accidents. He also counsels financial institutions on various matters, including securities-related actions, allegations of trade secret misappropriation and employee raiding.
