Roy J. Crawford received his undergraduate degree from Troy State University (B.S., summa cum laude, 1971), his law degree from University of Alabama (J.D., 1977), and his LL.M. from New York University (LL.M. in Taxation, 1980).
At the University of Alabama, Roy Crawford was a member of Omicron Delta Kappa, Order of the Coif, Jasons, Bench and Bar Honor Society, and Managing Editor of the Alabama Law Review, 1976-1977.
Mr. Crawford is the leader of the Firm’s corporate practice and emphasizes mergers and acquisitions, corporate governance, federal and state tax planning and litigation, and representation of health-care providers. He has been trial and appellate counsel in numerous federal and state tax cases, including O’Neal v. United States, 258 F.3d 1265 (11 Cir. 2001), Alabama Department of Revenue v. Sonat, Inc., 752 So.2d 1211 (Ala. 1999), and Lloyd Noland Foundation, Inc. v. City of Fairfield Healthcare Authority, 837 So. 2d 253 (Ala. 2002). He has been counsel on both the buy and sell sides of numerous acquisitions and often advises corporations and their shareholders and directors on corporate governance matters.
He is listed in the Best Lawyers in America for Corporate Law, Healthcare Law and Tax Law; as a top attorney in Alabama by the Super Lawyers magazine for Tax Law in 2008 – 2014; and was selected by Chambers USA in 2012 – 2016 as a “Leader In His Field” for his Corporate and Commercial work. He is currently a member of the Birmingham and American Bar Associations, Alabama State Bar (Past Chairman, Section of Taxation), the American Bar Foundation (Life Fellow; Past State Chairman), and the Alabama Law Foundation (Trustee, 1987-1993; President, 1993-1995; Life Fellow).
