Biography

Mr. Stetler graduated from Bucknell University in 1975 and George Washington Law School in 1978. He entered private practice in Washington D.C. where he practiced criminal defense, represented peace and homeless activists, and litigated constitutional issues. His firm sued the U.S. Supreme Court and, on appeal, convinced all nine justices of the existence of the right to engage in peaceful First Amendment activity on the sidewalk of the Supreme Court building. While continuing his practice, Mr. Stetler also served as an adjunct professor of law in the George Washington Law School clinical program (1982-84). Mr. Stetler taught criminal trial practice and provided post-trial representation for death penalty cases in Virginia and Georgia. In 1984, he was admitted to the Vermont bar and joined the Chittenden County Public Defender office, where he served as staff attorney and, later, managing attorney. In 1991, Mr. Stetler opened a private practice in Burlington, which his present partners later joined.

Mr. Stetler's current practice is concentrated on state and federal criminal defense. He has had extensive jury trial experience and handles cases ranging from DWI to homicide. He has represented clients in major federal drug trafficking cases and in cases involving crimes on the Internet. Mr. Stetler has received the Jonathan B. Chase Award from the Vermont ACLU. He has served on the Vermont Bar's Criminal Rule Advisory Committee and on the Board of Directors of the Vermont ACLU. He has served on the Board of the Vermont Association of Criminal Defense Lawyers since its inception and as President in 2002.
