  • The Investment Company Institute estimates that approximately 49% of U.S. households own mutual funds, and approximately 76% of mutual fund assets are held by individual investors. However, in the late 1990s, a number of competing financial products emerged. This article discusses the features of these products, advantages and disadvantages compared to mutual funds, and how these products will impact the mutual fund industry.
