  • This year, legislators across the country responded to consumer fears of identity theft, heightened by highly publicized data security breaches, by passing laws requiring consumer notification when there are security breaches involving private information. In all, twenty states and New York City have passed security breach notification laws. The new laws largely follow California's first-in-the nation information security breach notification law, but with key differences and compliance requirements.
