  • Legislators across the country are responding to consumer fears of identity theft, heightened by highly publicized data security breaches, by passing laws requiring consumer notification when there are security breaches involving private information. In all, twenty-two states and New York City have passed security breach notification laws. Thirteen of these state laws take effect in 2006. The new laws largely follow California's first-in-the-nation information security breach notification law, but with key differences and compliance requirements.
