Matt M. Paavola: Attorney with Samuel H. Paavola Law Offices
Attorney Awards

I am an expert in workers compensation law in the state of Maryland. I have been practicing in this area for 37 years. My father was a blue-collar worker and my office has been in an industrial area my entire legal career. My entire orientation has been toward helping the injured worker. I take pride in that fact. There's nothing I enjoy more and no other area of law I would rather practice. I have even declined opportunities to seek higher office in order to remain in the trenches with my injured workers. My motto is "Working for the Injured Worker". Check out my website.

My greatest accomplishment in the realm of workers compensation law is the seminal case of Swedo Vs Grace Industries. This case went all the way up to Maryland's highest court. Through my efforts I was able to change a very unfair predicament in the world of workers compensation in Maryland. Basically, the problem was that an injured worker who appealed an unfair low decision and prevailed before a jury of his peers, would then send the victorious decision back to the commission for that agency to make adjustments. A credit was given for weeks that the insurance company already paid. Most appeals last about 150 weeks so most of the credit gobbled up any victorious verdict. The swedo case changed the law so that the credit would be in terms of dollars, not weeks, so the victorious appellant injured worker would receive every penny of his or her victorious appeal.

Every year I also go to Annapolis to fight for or against legislation. For about 10 years I did it specifically for Maryland Worker's Compensation bills. I stopped for a while but am again on the committee of the Maryland Association of Justice which fights for the benefit of workers compensation clients at the state legislature. It is always a hard-fought battle. It seems like it's us against the world because the insurance companies have so many lobbyists and defense attorneys to fight against our single lobby. But it's a fight worth fighting. Mostly we have kept the system fair.
