  • The new UK Equality Act 2010 (the Equality Act) (and the regulations passed under the Equality Act) comes into force on 1 October 2010 (although some provisions will come into force in April 2011). It is one of the most important employment laws to come into force this year and is intended to encompass, in a single statute, discrimination legislation concerning sex, race, disability, sexual orientation, religion or belief and age. The Equality Act is intended to harmonise different concepts of discrimination across discrimination statutes and consolidate case-law. It will not apply retrospectively. The old laws will, therefore, be relevant to any cases involving acts which occurred before 1 October 2011.
