The Commission has published its Back on Track report for 2011-2012 which highlights that the majority of its investigations concern basic failures of trusteeship.
73 of the 85 investigations conducted by the Commission involved concerns about poor trusteeship and governance.
Other major topics concerned failures to properly manage conflicts of interest, which accounted for 16 investigations and fundraising governance, which accounted for nine.
The Commission reported that £5m of charity assets at risk were directly protected by its actions while £255m of income in the sector was monitored by the Commission through investigative work.
The report also revealed that concerns about fraud and financial crime accounts for 364 of the 1,027 serious incident reports submitted by trustees while concerns about safeguarding vulnerable beneficiaries featured in 394 serious incident reports.
The extent to which failures of trusteeship account for the problems within charities is clearly a concern for the Commission. Guidance has been issued here on the recruitment of charity trustees.
