Over his career, McCathern attorney James “Jim” Sherry has guided corporate and individual clients through every stage of civil and criminal proceedings, from internal investigation through merits appeal to the United States Supreme Court. Among other things, Jim:

•Has tried criminal and civil cases to victory before state and federal juries, including most recently as part of the McCathern team representing the minor plaintiff in a case involving the bullying and eventual strangulation of a sixth grade student (Rougely v. Live Oak Classical School, 261stDistrict Court for Travis County).
•Has taken numerous cases through successful appeal in state and federal court, including the United States Supreme Court (Filarsky v. Delia, 566 U.S. 377 (2012)).
•Was part of the core trial team for the defense of the largest ever criminal insider trading prosecution in U.S. history, developing unique expertise in the defense of insider trading cases and the use of wiretapping and electronic surveillance in business crime investigations
•Represented the former U.S. DOJ White House Liaison in connection with the congressional investigation into the 2006 firings of certain U.S. Attorneys, helping the client secure immunity from prosecution in exchange for public testimony before the House Judiciary Committee
•Defended a former CIA officer in a criminal leak case, for which Jim acquired a TS/SCI security clearance
•Led a months-long corporate internal investigation into potential export violations by a major aerospace defense contractor, resulting in close of the case and declination of punitive action by the U.S. Department of State
•Has managed a nationwide portfolio of actively litigated negligent supervision cases on behalf of a Roman Catholic religious order of priests and brothers

Jim’s uniquely diverse professional experience has given him the opportunity to represent corporate and individual clients - both plaintiffs and defendants - in cases involving everything from slip and fall injuries and motor vehicle accidents to complex securities fraud, corporate bribery, and public corruption matters involving parallel civil and criminal proceedings. He has also defended clients before state bar disciplinary authorities.

Jim graduated summa cum laude from the University of Michigan, Ann Arbor in 2002, and earned his J.D. cum laude from the George Washington University Law School in 2005. In 2009, Jim returned to GW Law as an Adjunct Professor of Legal Research and Writing, and since 2016 has taught the same course at the University of North Texas - Dallas School of Law. Jim is also a referring attorney for Lambda Legal and Immigration Equality, and has represented several LGBT clients in successful applications for asylum in the United States.

Jim offices in the McCathern Dallas office and is a member of the bars of Texas, Massachusetts, and the District of Columbia and is admitted to practice before the United States Supreme Court, the First, Second, and Fifth Circuit Courts of Appeals, and federal district courts around the country.

Jim was named to the Texas “Rising Stars” list by Super Lawyers in 2016.
