Biography

Katherine F. Cser focuses her practice on labor and employment issues. She counsels and advises business owners, managers and human resources professionals on workplace issues including discrimination, retaliation, wage and hour laws, medical leave laws, among other concerns.

Bio

Katherine has practiced as a commercial litigator on a wide variety of commercial disputes in federal and state courts. Katherine has experience in commercial transactions litigation, as well as restrictive covenants and intellectual property and related tort claims.

She also advises employers in employment law issues, including the review and revision of employment policies and provides counsels employers on employment decisions. She is an experienced employment law litigator and has represented employers in administrative proceedings and in litigation. In both commercial litigation and employment law matters, Katherine has experience representing both small businesses and large corporations.

Before joining Kerr Russell, Katherine was an attorney in the New York City office of a national law firm. In 2014 and 2015, she was named to the New York Metro Super Lawyers’ Rising Stars list. In 2016, 2017, and 2018, Katherine was named to the Michigan Super Lawyers’ Rising Stars list.

Michigan Paid Medical Leave Act Effective March 2019

Michigan’s paid sick-time measure, the Michigan Paid Medical Leave Act (the “Act”) will go into effect this March. The Act, signed by Governor Snyder on December 14, 2018, provides 40 hours annually of paid sick time to eligible employees who work for employers with 50 or more employees.

One of our traditions here at Kerr Russell is to hold a holiday raffle to benefit three local charities as well as to conduct a toy drive for local children. This year's raffle (many of the beautiful and festive prizes picture here) raised a record total of $3,450 which will be divided equally among three organizations: Capuchin Soup Kitchen, Wigs 4 Kids of Michigan, Inc., and Ronald McDonald House Charities of Ann Arbor.

Michigan Minimum Wage Increase to Take Effect on January 1, 2018

Effective January 1, 2018, Michigan’s minimum wage will increase from $8.90 per hour to $9.25 per hour. This is a scheduled increase mandated by the Workforce Opportunity Wage Act, Public Act 138 of 2014.

On October 20, the Federal Trade Commission and the Antitrust Division of the Department of Justice issued its “Antitrust Guidance for Human Resource Professionals” (“Guidance”) on the application of antitrust law to employment decisions. As “no-poaching” agreements or agreements to fix employees’ wages or benefits can impede competition, the Antitrust Division has advised that these types of agreements should be treated similarly to other conduct such as price fixing.
