Brent Windwick, Q.C.: Attorney with Field Law

Biography

Brent Windwick has represented health care organizations and professionals in malpractice litigation, public inquiries and administrative hearings since 1985. Most recently Brent was the lead lawyer for Alberta Health Services in the Preferential Health Services Access judicial inquiry (2012-2013).

As a legal and strategic advisor, Brent has given advice and guidance on diverse governance, operational, risk and policy issues in health care and created and reviewed policies and procedures in many areas of clinical practice with particular focus on clinical risk management and patient safety. Brent has provided these services as a leader and a mentor of in-house legal service teams in health care organizations, and as external legal counsel.

Brent was a member of Alberta Health and Alberta Health Services working groups that created provincial Medical Staff Bylaws and Rules to regulate all physicians working in Alberta health facilities. He has worked with health ministries to develop and implement legislation in public health, health information privacy and access, and professional regulation.

Brent has developed dispute resolution processes for health care organizations and mediated disputes involving health professionals and health researchers. He has done advanced dispute resolution training at Harvard Law School.

Brent has presented hundreds of in-services to front line health professionals, executives and Boards over the past 30 years. He is an Adjunct Assistant Professor of Medicine and Pharmacy at the University of Alberta, and teaches clinical risk management at York University.

Brent is a member of the Interagency Advisory Panel on Research Ethics and the Alberta Cancer Research Ethics Board, and has recently been appointed to the Incident Investigation Faculty of the Canadian Patient Safety Institute. He has led or participated in many health law and policy initiatives through CPSI, the University of Alberta Health Law Institute, the Canadian Institutes for Health Research and the Canadian Bar Association.
