Biography

Jon has practiced law in Edmonton since 1980 and joined the firm of Field LLP in 1988. His practise now focuses on aboriginal, constitutional and class or mass actions. Jon has represented government in constitutional references and other constitutional litigation before the Alberta Court of Queen's Bench, the Alberta Court of Appeal and the Supreme Court of Canada and has appeared on behalf of aboriginal groups in aboriginal rights cases before the Federal Court of Canada and the Federal Court of Appeal. He represented hundreds of people who were wrongfully sterilized by the Alberta Government's Eugenics Program and more recently has acted for approximately 1000 aboriginal Canadians who were placed in Indian Residential Schools. In 2005 he helped lead a national consortium of lawyers in the negotiation of the historic multi-billion dollar Indian Residential School settlement which also established a Truth and Reconciliation Commission to address the legacy of the schools. In 2008 he was appointed a Special Advocate in relation to security certificate matters by the Government of Canada. Most recently he has been engaged in the defence of class actions brought against health services providers in Alberta.

Jon has been a frequent speaker to professional seminars on legal practice issues and has been a guest speaker at both local and national conferences on aboriginal law issues. Prior to practicing law, Jon reported news for the Edmonton Journal and the Calgary Herald and served as a radio commentator on legal issues for CBC Radio. He maintains an interest in defamation and media law issues.
