Ryan's insurance practice includes acting as coverage counsel for international and national insurers and litigation involving CGL risk insurance, products liability insurance, professional liability insurance, directors' and officers' liability insurance, property insurance and motor vehicle insurance. He has acted for insurers in claims arising from construction losses, fire losses, motor vehicle accidents and slip and falls. In addition, Ryan acts as claims counsel for a large international manufacturer.
Ryan's commercial litigation practice includes litigating products liability claims, breach of contract claims, shareholder disputes, and construction disputes. He also advises clients regarding compliance with sale of goods and consumer protection legislation.
Ryan is an experienced courtroom advocate. He has appeared before all levels of court in Alberta, and has represented clients in lawsuits in Alberta, British Columbia, Saskatchewan, Manitoba and the Northwest Territories. He has also represented clients in a number of administrative tribunals.
Ryan is also experienced in helping clients resolve their disputes by way of alternative dispute resolution. He has participated in mediations, judicial dispute resolutions and settlement conferences.
•Advises international and national insurance clients on coverage issues and defends those insurers against first party coverage claims
•Advises a large North American manufacturer regarding warranty claims issues and represents that manufacturer in lawsuits involving claims of manufacturing defects and breach of warranty
•Successfully defended manufacturers at trial on multiple occasions against allegations of manufacturing defects and breach of warranty
•Successfully defended retailers at trial against allegations a product sold by the retailer was defective
•Obtained summary dismissal of a defamation claim made against a client
•Successfully argued before the Alberta Court of Appeal that the claims against an employer arising out of a motor vehicle accident were barred by the combined operation of the Workers' Compensation Act and the Fatal Accidents Act
•Successfully opposed an application for judicial review of a decision of the Appeals Commission for Alberta Workers' Compensation before the Alberta Court of Queen's Bench and the Alberta Court of Appeal
Ryan presents at various in-house insurance and client seminars on topics including insurance coverage issues, construction law issues, cross-border trade issues, and conflicts of laws.
