Biography

Sandra Corbett is a partner in the firm’s Edmonton office. Her practice focuses on resolution of complex tort and liability matters in the civil and commercial litigation areas, with an emphasis on insurance defence litigation. Sandra defends high-exposure claims arising from product liability, municipal and school liability, serious accidents, fire loss and business interruption. She also defends insurers in insurance coverage disputes.

Sandra regularly provides advice to U.S. law firms and manufacturers requiring cross-border litigation assistance. With nearly 30 years of experience helping clients navigate the Canadian regulatory regime and a strong grasp of similar U.S. federal and state regulations, she is well-positioned to assist U.S. clients seeking strategic insight into the procedural and substantive legal issues they face in Canada. Sandra frequently attends the DRI Product Liability Conference to keep abreast of developments in U.S. law and jurisprudence.

Sandra has defended clients in high-profile and ground-breaking disputes, including a personal injury lawsuit involving the highest potential liability exposure within the last 20 years in Alberta (MacCabe v. Westlock), and the first Alberta case in which a female plaintiff claimed that her earnings should be calculated based on male earning statistics.

In 2014, Sandra was elected as a Bencher (Director) to the Law Society of Alberta, a self-governing regulatory body responsible for establishing standards for Alberta lawyers. Since her election, Sandra has served as Chair of the Audit and Finance Committee, Chair of the Trust Safety Committee, Vice Chair of the Policy Committee and Vice Chair of the Professional Responsibility Committee, in addition to serving as a member of a number of adjudicative committees and task forces addressing regulatory and disciplinary matters arising under the Legal Professions Act.

Sandra is a member of two vetted U.S. organizations, the Federation of Defense & Corporate Counsel (FDCC), and the International Association of Defense Counsel (IADC). She served as Vice Chair of the FDCC International Practice & Law Section from 2012-13, and is presently Vice Chair of the FDCC Product Liability Section. She was elected to the Fellows of the American Bar Foundation in 2012, and is also a member of the Association of Defense Trial Attorneys (ADTA).

Sandra has been heavily involved in improving the practice of law and advancing the interests of female practitioners in the civil defence bar, both in Canada and the U.S. She served as a Board Member of Canadian Defence Lawyers (CDL) from 2003-13, as CDL President from 2008-09, and was awarded the 2014 CDL Lee Samis Award of Excellence. Sandra served as the first Alberta lawyer on the Board of DRI-The Voice of the Defense Bar from 2008-11. Before serving on the DRI Board, she represented the Canadian region as General Council Representative from 2005-08. Sandra received a DRI State Leadership Award in 2008, an Exceptional Performance Citation in 2009, and a Service Award in 2001. In 2017, she received the DRI Mary Massaron Award for Advancement of Women in the Legal Profession.

Sandra has co-taught Insurance Law as a sessional instructor at the Faculty of Law at the University of Alberta since 2012, and previously served as a volunteer for the Legal Education Society of Alberta. She is a frequent speaker at legal conferences on numerous insurance, product liability, personal injury and commercial litigation topics.

Value to Clients

Sandra has extensive training and experience in adjudicating appeals and administrative law proceedings, which gives her valuable insight into how disputes are decided behind the scenes and makes her a more effective advocate for her litigation clients. She also has a calm demeanor that puts clients at ease during chaotic disputes and helps build client confidence in the strategies she develops. While she has a long track record of achieving favourable results in the courtroom, clients also appreciate her dedication to exploring every alternative for resolving disputes without the risk and expense of prolonged litigation.

Outside the Office

In her spare time, Sandra enjoys spending time with her family, reading, vacationing in tropical climates, and home decorating/renovation projects.
