  • Recognizing that California's system of ranking public schools according to API (Academic Performance Index) scores has resulted in "an overreliance on ... Standardized Testing," the California Legislature has enacted a new law to change the focus of API calculations in both elementary and secondary schools. Governor Brown signed SB 1458 (Steinberg) on September 26, 2012, marking a move to require the California Superintendent of Schools and school districts throughout the state to begin to account for other factors in their overall pictures of student success, including graduation rates and students' readiness for college or technical training.
