• $7.6 Million in Asbestos Cleanup Costs for California School District

  • Location, test scores, and -- most importantly -- safety are all main concerns for the parents of California school children. Recently during the modernization of eleven Huntington Beach elementary schools, three were closed indefinitely after asbestos was discovered at the sites.

    The Ocean View school district was forced to relocated more than 1,600 displaced students. This, as well as asbestos cleanup and other related costs, have added $7.6 million to the district's modernization project. It is reported that the district is spending $50,000 a week to send students to other campuses during the abatement.

    Children are also missing out on educational opportunities, as the district saw attendance drop when parents kept their children out of school because of health concerns. Added to these issues is the fact that the Ocean View School District recently put the official in charge of handling the asbestos cleanup plan on paid administrative leave.

    When the asbestos will be cleaned up and how much more money it might take to remedy the situation remain unknown, but parents are growing impatient with the relocation and lack of safety for their children.
