  • Next week the Senate Education Committee and House Transportation Committee is expected to hear legislation requiring any school bus ordered or purchased on or after July 1, 2018, to be equipped with a restraint system. SB381 / HB395, sponsored by Sen. Todd Gardenhire and Rep. Joanne Favors, also requires any school bus currently used to transport students to be equipped with seatbelts by July 1, 2023. The bill's fiscal note estimates that equipping all school buses in the state with restraint systems will cost over $70 million per year until 2023. Safety first.
