  • Like many businesses, electric cooperatives view automated telephone calls and text messages as an effective means of communicating with members. Cooperatives may consider using automated calls and text messages for any number of reasons, such as notifying members of low balances on prepaid accounts, annual meeting reminders or unplanned service outages. So, it is not surprising to see more and more cooperatives utilize, or consider utilizing, technology like autodialers and automated text messaging. This is especially true where the members may want, or expect, information in near real time. However, before utilizing automated calls or text messages, cooperatives should be mindful of federal and state laws and regulations controlling their use.
