  • The passage of the Safe Drinking Water Act (SDWA) of 1974 brought with it mandatory standards for drinking water quality which did not exist before. For the first time, the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) was authorized to set standards for any contaminant in public water systems that adversely affects public health no matter where the water system was and no matter how big or small it was.
