  • I still remember the ballyhoo leading up to the first Earth Day 46 years ago on April 22, 1970, when the smoke-infused fog of the late 60s had cleared. There was a lot of doom and gloom voiced about the dire consequences that would befall the world if we didn’t step up to the plate and do the right thing. The planet was in danger and “we,” the brash, bold, too often stoned and self-empowered youth of that generation were going to take care of it. (Actually “we” said we were going to take care of a lot of other things too, but there is neither time nor space to catalogue those things, so we will just stick to Earth Day.)
