Unmarried and unregistered partners who are in a sustainable and exclusive relationship are permitted to accompany or join an individual residing in the Netherlands, now that the Dutch government has formally abolished restrictions that had been in place since October 2012.
These new rules took effect June 1, 2013. The Dutch government announced in February that it had begun rule-making procedures to formally lift the restrictions on unmarried and unregistered partners.
The new rules also effectively eliminate the temporary marriage permit used by unmarried partners for whom it was legally impossible to marry or register their partnership in their home country.
