Jerry Canaan is a director with the firm and focuses on administrative law, regulatory affairs and the licensing of health care providers. He represents individual providers, hospitals, ambulatory surgery centers, pharmacies, and long-term care facilities with compliance and licensing matters before State and Federal agencies. As a result, he has significant experience with the Board of Medicine, Board of Dentistry, Board of Long-Term Care Administrators, Board of Pharmacy, Board of Nursing and other Boards under the Virginia Department of Health Professions as well as the HHS Office for Civil Rights, the Drug Enforcement Agency, and other Federal agencies.
He also provides compliance and risk management advice to health care providers with a special emphasis on government investigations and inspections; audits; reporting requirements under State and Federal law; reimbursement disputes; HIPAA; pain management regulations; provider disputes with managed care entities; and privileging/credentialing disputes.
Mr. Canaan has handled investigations involving compounding pharmacies; patient deaths; birth injuries; medication administration errors; billing/coding; operating room fires; false positive lab results; pain management; proper prescribing; adverse office sedation and anesthesia events; TMJ; dental implants; nerve damage; orthognathic surgery; orthodontics; prosthodontics; endodontics; periodontics; and many others. He has also defended facilities and providers in malpractice litigation and appeared before the Virginia General Assembly regarding all types of health care legislation.
Mr. Canaan frequently lectures on recent legislative actions, case law developments, and risk management strategies to avoid civil litigation or licensing investigations.
