- It was believed that the question of federal funding for Planned Parenthood could lead to a government shutdown, but that didn’t happen. For supporters of Planned Parenthood, however, that didn’t mean it was going to be a quiet week.
Planned Parenthood’s CEO Cecile Richards testified before the House Oversight Committee this week, and the back and forth with her Republican critics made for headlines across the country.
Richards, who was the lone witness at the hearing, came under intense questioning by many Republicans on the committee, including Committee Chair Jason Chaffetz (R-Utah).
Much of the questioning revolved around undercover videos that purport to show the sale of fetal tissue by Planned Parenthood - a charge that Richards categorically denied.
In addition to the questions about the videos, Chaffetz also questioned Richards about Planned Parenthood’s spending, claiming that more than $40 million in federal tax dollars was wasted on exorbitant travel costs, parties and office space.
This week’s hearing marks the third time a Congressional committee has dedicated a hearing to the undercover Planned Parenthood videos, though this is the first time anyone from the group has participated.
