  • Democratic congressional leaders recently introduced the “Democracy is Strengthened by Casting Light on Spending in Elections Act” (the DISCLOSE Act) — legislation designed to “blunt” the Supreme Court’s decision in Citizens United. The bill has only two Republican co-sponsors in the House— Representatives Mike Castle (R-DE) and Walter Jones (R-NC) — and none in the Senate. Hearings began last week in the House and the sponsors set a goal of passing the bills into law by July 4th, in time to impact the 2010 elections. It remains to be seen if this bill will pass the Senate, given the crowded legislative calendar and the very limited Republican support so far.
