Mary was born and raised in Minnesota. She attended the University of Montana and obtained a Bachelor of Arts in English, with high honors in 1984. She then attended the University of Montana School of Law, graduating in 1989, with honors. Mary worked for Deloitte & Touche, in Seattle, Washington, after graduating from law school. She then returned to Montana, where she clerked for U.S. District Judge Charles C. Lovell and U.S. Magistrate Judge Carolyn S. Ostby. She was in private practice in Helena before joining Ugrin, Alexander, Zadick, & Higgins, in 2004.

Mary is an avid runner and also enjoys cooking, gardening and spending time with her husband and two children and their menagerie of animals.
