  • On November 7, 2009, the US House of Representatives passed its comprehensive healthcare reform bill after months of effort by the three committees of jurisdiction (Ways & Means, Energy & Commerce, and Education & Labor) and the House Democratic leadership. The bill, the Affordable Health Care for America Act (HR 3962) would create a health insurance marketplace for consumers to compare insurance options, and would help qualified individuals and small businesses purchase insurance by providing affordability credits and tax credits. The House bill includes a public option, touted as a way of keeping prices and coverage competitive or of providing an affordable alternative option, if insurance companies do not offer one. The bill contains provisions that would begin reforming the healthcare delivery system, and focus on wellness and prevention, and eliminating fraud, waste, and abuse. www.arnoldporter.com
