  • The Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act of 1996 (“HIPAA”) provides rights and protections for participants and beneficiaries in group health plans. Under HIPAA, the privacy rule and security rule were issued to provide standards for the use and dissemination of health care information. The privacy rule established regulations for the use and disclosure of protected health information (“PHI”). The security rule complements the privacy rule by identifying various security safeguards that covered entities must adopt.
