  • A 17-year-old law raises many questions, and its application in some very common situations is unclear. For the past 17 years, New Jersey has had a law that prohibits physicians from referring their patients to an entity in which they have an ownership or other financial interest, unless one of a handful of statutory and regulatory exceptions applies. However, this simple concept, known as the Codey Law, raises many questions in practice, and even now its application in some very common situations is unclear.
