Tom is a Helena, Montana native who has been practicing with the Keller Law Firm since 1977.
Tom has a Bachelors of Science degree in Business Administration (accounting) from the University of Montana in 1973 and a Juris Doctor from the University of Montana in 1976.
After law school, Tom returned to Helena in 1976 and served a one-year clerkship with State District Court Judge Peter Meloy. Following that clerkship and a very brief stint at the Montana State Auditor’s Office, Tom joined the Keller Law Firm as an associate in 1977 and was made a partner in 1980. He has been the managing partner from 1982 through the present.
Tom’s practice is a general litigation and civil practice. A significant portion of Tom’s practice has been insurance defense litigation including construction litigation, architect and engineer malpractice litigation, and personal injury and product liability defense. He also handles non-insurance related defense litigation and some plaintiff’s litigation. Tom makes use of his business accounting background in his commercial practice, as well as an increasing estate planning and probate practice. He also serves as a registered agent for a significant number of out-of-state entities, such as corporations and LLCs. Tom is actively involved in alternate dispute resolution; he is frequently retained as a mediator and occasionally as an arbitrator. Tom is on the list of approved mediators for the First Judicial District, and the Montana Supreme Court, and is an approved arbitrator with the National Arbitration Forum.
Professionally Tom is and has been a member of the First Judicial District Bar Association, serving as President during 1983-1984; the State Bar of Montana; the Montana Defense Trial Lawyers Association, serving on the Board of Directors for a number of years; the Defense Research Institute; the International Association of Defense Counsel; and the American Judicature Society.
Tom is admitted to practice before the state courts in the State of Montana, the U.S. District Court of Montana, the U.S. Bankruptcy Court of Montana, and the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Ninth Circuit Court.
Non-legal affiliations that Tom is involved with include the Montana City Volunteer Fire Department for 22 years, now retired; Trustee of the Montana City Rural Fire District, 1995-present; the Optimist Service Club of Helena and Optimists, International; the Green Meadow Country Club; the Gates of the Mountains Boat Club.
Tom and his wife Kerry have two adult children. They enjoy golfing, skiing, and boating, and they are avid sports fans.
