  • Business visitors to China who require a visa and intend to conduct business or trade must now use the newly created M visa category, the Chinese government has indicated.

Broader application of the M visa category comes as the government continues to clarify aspects of the Exit and Entry Administrative Law, which took effect on July 1 and its implementing regulations, which took effect on September 1. Under previous interpretations, the M visa was to be used only by business visitors intending to engage in commercial trading activities, while all other business visitors were to continue using the F visa category. The F visa will now be used only for a limited scope of activities, such as cultural exchange and research.

Business travelers should expect consular delays for the next several weeks, as Chinese diplomatic posts implement the broader application of the new M visa and new application forms.
