Governmental Ethics & Election Law

The attorneys and professionals who make up our governmental ethics and election law practice counsel clients on local, state and federal law as it pertains to lobbying, the establishment and maintenance of political action committees, ethics rules, and campaign finance and political contributions. Our team is well-experienced with the recent changes to federal ethics and campaign finance law, including recent changes in reporting requirements brought about by the Honest Leadership and Open Government Act of 2007 (HLOGA), and is up-to-date on the various laws, rules, and reporting requirements at the state level.

Our governmental ethics and election law team specializes in the following four areas:

Campaign Finance Compliance and Litigation

  • Counseling with regard to individual and corporate political contributions to candidates, parties, and political action committees (PACs)
  • Litigation support for ballot initiative petitions and campaign law disputes

Lobbying and Ethics Compliance

  • Counseling with regard to House, Senate and executive branch ethics rules, including gift and travel rules, prohibited activities and reporting requirements
  • Preparation and review of registration and quarterly lobbying disclosure forms for Congress (Forms LD-1 and LD-2
  • Guidance for in-house executives on such procedures, including assistance for those who may need to file individual lobbying activity reports (Form LD-203)

Federal Election Commission Compliance and Representation

  • Establishment and maintenance of political action committees (PACs)
  • Preparation and review of quarterly/monthly PAC disclosure forms before submission to the Federal Election Commission (FEC)
  • Counseling with regard to FEC rules and regulations
  • Assistance with preparation and filing of comments on behalf of clients under FEC rulemaking proceedings
  • Soliciting guidance from the FEC on behalf of clients
  • Representation before the FEC in enforcement matters

State and Local Law Compliance

  • Counseling with regard to lobbying, political action committee and campaign activity, ethics and gift rules, and political contributions to candidates, parties, and political action committees (PACs) on the state and local levels
  • Preparation and review of necessary registration and disclosure forms required by certain state and local jurisdictions
