  • Since 2010, the United States Patent and Trademark Office (“USPTO”) and the European Patent Office (“EPO”) have jointly worked to develop a common, internationally compatible classification system. The Cooperative Patent Classification system (“CPC”) models the International Patent Classification system used by the World Intellectual Property Organization, but is more detailed to improve patent searching. The USPTO & EPO jointly manage maintenance of the CPC, in order to share resources when revising the CPC or subsequently reclassifying documents. The CPC is designed to make both organizations more efficient by decreasing examination time, both by removing re-classification and speeding up patent searching.
