  • As uncertainties surround what set of emissions regulations will take over following the expiration of the Kyoto Protocol in 2012, Europe has readied itself by lining up ambitious goals to address climate change in aftermath of Kyoto's expiration. In March the European Commission, the rulemaking body of the European Union, approved a directive that created a binding goal of using 10 percent biofuel for transportation by 2020. Earlier that month, the EU nations pledged to cut their greenhouse gas emissions drastically. Finally, in June, the European Commission also said it would revise its cap and trade system in a way that could force big polluters to pay even more for their ability to pollute.
