• D.C. Council Approves Paid Leave Law by a Veto Proof Margin

  • On Tuesday, December 20th, the D.C. Council approved the Universal Paid Leave Amendment Act of 2016, placing the District at the forefront of jurisdictions with employee-friendly paid leave laws. The Council passed the bill by a 9-4 margin, making it veto proof. This legislation provides D.C. employees with 8 weeks of paid leave following the birth or adoption of a child, 6 weeks to care for a family member, and 2 weeks for personal medical care. These benefits will not apply to federal or D.C. government employees. To fund the bill, the city will levy a new 0.62 percent payroll tax on all District employers, which will generate $250 million annually. It is expected that the District will start collecting taxes in 2019, in order to provide paid leave for employees in 2020.
