  • Sadly, violence and harassment in the workplace are not new issues. A 2004 Statistics Canada survey identified that 17 percent of violent incidents in Canada occurred in the workplace. We read news reports across North America of people being harassed, hurt or killed as a result of the conduct of their fellow workers, customers or members of the public. The Ontario government’s Bill 168, in force on June 15, 2010, is intended to help further protect workers from violence and harassment in the workplace. A December 2009 government news release quotes the Minister of Labour as saying, “The government has acted to protect workers from workplace violence. Everyone should be able to work without fear of violence in a safe and healthy workplace.”
